A LEGEND

Cheer Up

This program involves creating safe spaces for legends to meet, interact, and support each other by exchanging psychosocial assistance and building social bonds for sustainability and wellness. Healthcare services are extended during these meetings, integrated with physical fitness sessions, storytelling, and gaming.

As part of this program, there are other activities that include:

  • Group Home Visits: A group of legends visits another legend, exchanges gifts, and learns more about a colleague’s domestic life to offer relevant support.
  • These visits lead to the formation of “The LegendsKlatches,", support groups of 5 to 10 members functioning as decentralized units for psychosocial support, economic empowerment, and security.

  • Targeted Home Visits: Organization staff visits an individual facing a crisis or health challenges, linking them to necessary support, such as relocation, legal aid, or medical assistance, tailored to observable needs.

  • Kaka Rest and Rejuvenate Home: A retreat and emergency shelter for legends undergoing severe human rights violations, domestic violence, or social pressure. It includes life coaching sessions to develop resilience and recovery tactics.

This program, stemming from the Luganda word "Wetekegere," meaning "prepare for yourself," focuses on ensuring legends are well-prepared for old age and retirement, both socially and economically.

This program has two major components:

  • Economic Empowerment for Self-Sustainability: This involves creating employment opportunities, savings and investment schemes, and tapping into government programs to enhance the standards of living for the elderly. Advocacy for economic inclusion and justice is also emphasized.

  • Retirement Programming: Prepares legends for a comfortable retirement by educating them on aging, engaging in life-inspiring and coaching dialogues on nutrition and health habits, mentoring young leaders, building inclusive retirement facilities, and assisting legends.

living

This program involves documenting the lived realities of legends in the community, compiling stories from historical figures, and keeping an informed view of the movement's progress.

In this program, intergenerational dialogues are conducted to let young people learn and be mentored by legends. The documentation of community historical achievements and the movement at large is done through individual story compilations in the Legenquetale compendium and video documentaries.

HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCACY

movement Building

The Proud Legends Initiative contributes to community databases and collective advocacy efforts against human rights injustices involving sexual minorities in Uganda. As part of the Strategic Response Team (SRT), the organization responds to human rights violence among older individuals by documenting cases and linking elderly persons to legal aid. Programs and projects are designed to promote community cohesion for advocacy.

  • Media Advocacy and Programming: PLI hosts the DAS (Demystifying African Sexuality) podcast, debunking misinformation and stereotypes against sexual minorities in Uganda propagated by the anti-gender and anti-diverse sexuality movement.

  • Stress Management Classes (Me Being Me): To relieve social pressure among older queer persons, especially those in the closet, who may never reach out for services, stress management online classes are designed to promote mental resilience in a toxic environment. Available every Saturday.

Geriatric Care and Health Promotion

These health-related programs target the elderly, including those living with HIV, non-communicable diseases, and age-induced issues like menopause, bone problems, Alzheimer’s, and infertility, which could otherwise decrease the quality of life for legends. Age-related health videos are created, and the public is educated about aging, caring for the elderly, and preventing diseases through self-care.

Proud Legends Initiative is grateful for all the support, small and big towards the work of making the lives of older, middle aged and elderly minorities in Uganda better.

Do not hesitate to reach out and find out how you too can support this vital work.
